Telefónica launches single pan-european mobile data tariff.

• High-speed mobile web browsing in EU for just €2 a day • Travel tariff heralds worry-free smartphone roaming • Telefónica data roaming is up to 10 times cheaper than the EU regulator’s rate.

 London/Madrid Telefónica today banishes 'bill shock' with the announcement of its first standard pan-European data roaming tariff – giving smartphone customers 25MB of high-speed Internet usage anywhere across the 27 European Union member states for just €2 (1) a day.

Telefónica‟s EU-wide tariff means mobile customers – on Movistar or O2 networks – will no longer have to worry about the cost of sending or receiving emails, updating their Facebook status or browsing the web on their smartphones when travelling or holidaying abroad.

For €2 a day, Telefónica is giving its smartphone customers travelling in the EU a data volume of 25 Megabytes – which translates to 250 visits to essential websites like Facebook, Twitter, Google or BBC Online and up to 500 emails (2). Additionally, customers will only pay for days they choose to use data, and will not be charged should they wish to switch off their phone.

The Telefónica tariff weighs in at a fraction of new price caps announced by the European Union yesterday – which ruled that as of 1 July, one data megabyte should cost no more than 70 cents, or €17.50 for 25MB.

On a per megabyte basis, Telefónica's European tariff works out considerably cheaper than the EU‟s regulated rate.

'You no longer need to switch off your smartphones when travelling within the EU, and neither do you need to worry about bill shock when you get home,' said José María Álvarez-Pallete, Chairman and CEO of Telefónica Europe. 'Our European data tariff gives our smartphone customers great value while allowing them to do what really matters – to stay connected wherever they are in a simple and transparent way and with complete peace of mind.'

Smartphone customers use on average around 6MB (3) in a day, but any Telefónica customers exceeding 25 MB will be immediately notified. The Pan-European tariff launched in Germany in May and will be available this summer to O2 and Movistar customers in Spain, United Kingdom, Ireland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Europe and Middle East: Motorola to launch Razr Maxx smartphone in May.

Motorola Mobility announced a new version of the Razr smartphone, launching in May in Europe and the Middle East.

 The Motorola Razr Maxx is marketed as a long-life phone offering extended talk time of up to 17.6 hours. 

The Android phone features 1GB RAM, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, Kevlar fibre frame and 4.3-inch Super Amoled touchscreen with Gorilla Glass. The phone comes with Morotola's Smart Actions, an application that automates everyday tasks based on triggers like time of day, location and battery levels, helping to conserve power.

The New iPad useless for European 4G LTE networks.

The new iPad WiFi + 4G put up for pre-order in Europe yesterday supports the same 700MHz and 2100MHz LTE bands as the AT&T version in the US; however, actual LTE roll-out in Europe is expected to use the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands.

According to Slashgear, even though LTE network is almost inexistent in Europe, as soon as the new technology is deployed, it will only support devices that work on 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands.

The New iPad have been confirmed to support 700MHz and 2100MHz LTE bands, which are fully compatible with the US-based carrier’s network. (AT&T)

Both the international and the AT&T models have the same quadband UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA and quadband GSM/EDGE support; the Verizon model uses 700MHz LTE and dualband CDMA/EVDO Rev.A.

In Japan, meanwhile, although the iPad is also branded WiFi + 4G, the version there doesn’t have any LTE support. Instead, it tops out at DC-HSDPA

This basically makes the new iPad useless in Europe when it comes to 4G LTE data speeds. European customers who decide to purchase this model and plan to use it in their region will be limited to DC-HSDPA  data speeds.
