Late Q2 2012: Intel to release Next-Gen Xeon processors.
Intel is set to release its next-generation Xeon processor at the end of the second quarter. Since Nvidia and AMD will also release graphics cards that feature PCI Express Gen.3 in the second half, sources from workstation vendors expect the two updates will drive a replacement trend for workstations.
Xeon processors have not had a major update for two years and the existing Xeon E3 processors still adopt the Sandy Bridge architecture. The upcoming Ivy Bridge-based Xeon E3 processors are expected to start shipping in June.
PCI Express Gen.3 features 8GT/s transmission rates and is backward compatible. Nvidia and AMD are both expected to adopt the specification in their graphics cards in the third or fourth quarter.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) has just launched its latest Z series workstation products in Taiwan along with its first all-in-one workstation – the HP Z1, which features a 27-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2560 by 1440.
In 2011, HP had a share of 66% in Taiwan's workstation market and 46.6% in the global workstation market, followed by Dell at 38.9% and Lenovo third. HP's workstation ODM partner is Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), its thin client is supplied by Wistron.
