Colombia: ZTE to provide managed services to Comcel.

ZTE Corporation, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, announced it has entered an agreement to provide managed services to Colombian mobile operator Comcel. The deal will make ZTE the largest managed services provider in the country. As part of the agreement, ZTE will provide managed services equipment including BTS and power equipment. 

Owned by Mexican telecommunications company, América Móvil, Comcel has 30 million subscribers and is the largest mobile operator in Colombia. 

In 2011, ZTE signed a contract to provide managed services to Telefónica-Telecom, the largest fixed line operator in Colombia. The company’s agreement with Comcel means it will provide services to more than 6,000 sites, the most of any provider in Colombia.

"We are pleased with the expansion of telecoms services in Colombia and the South American market,” said ZTE Columbia Vice President Zhang Dianjun. ”The agreement with Comcel will help the operator provide customised services to its users.” 

ZTE provides a comprehensive range of high-quality wireless, wireline and access & bearer managed services to more than 100 million subscribers in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific. The company recently entered into partnerships with multinational operators such as Telenor, Teliasonera, Telefonica, Orange, H3G, MTN, KPN, STC and ZAIN.

ZTE has signed an agreement with Hi3G Sweden worth UD$74 million to deploy several UMTS/LTE TDD/LTE FDD base stations, as well as auxiliary microwave and data transmission equipment over the next three years.

"We are very glad to ink the deal with Hi3G in Sweden where the two companies launched the world’s first multi-mode LTE network,” said Mr. Huang Zheng, CEO of ZTE Sweden. "

According to the company, its Uni-Ran solutions have effectively helped Hi3G Sweden to now integrate three modes and five frequencies into one network which started into commercial operation of large-scale LTE TDD network at the end of 2011.

2012: Huawei and  ZTE to ship nearly 100 million smartphones for 15% global share target.

Huawei Device and ZTE, two China-based vendors, will together ship 95-100 million smartphones for a combined global market share of 15% in 2012, according to Taiwan-based makers of handset components.

Huawei shipped 16 million smartphones to rank globally 9th and ZTE 11 million for 10th place in 2011, the sources cited Gartner statistics as indicating. Huawei and ZTE have set internal shipment targets of 60 million and 35-40 million smartphones respectively for 2012.

Huawei and ZTE have produced Android handsets for own-brand sale and on a customization basis through cooperation with mobile telecom carriers in the recent two years.

 The two vendors initially lunched smartphones for sale at low to medium prices and began to make a foray into market segments of medium- to high-level smartphones in the second half of 2011.

 In 2012, Huawei and ZTE will launch smartphones equipped with quad-core processors, LTE (Long Term Evolution) functionality and large screens of over 4.5 inches as well as Windows Phone-based models.

China-based hqew.com forecasts that Huawei and ZTE will ship 57 million smartphones and 37 million ones respectively in 2012, while China-based vendors TCL Communication Technology, GiONEE, Coolpad and Lenovo will each ship more than 10 million units.

MWC 2012: ZTE announced the Mimosa X with NVidia Icera 450 HSPA+ modem

NVIDIA and ZTE today announced the ZTE Mimosa X, the first smartphone to be powered both by the NVIDIA ®Tegra® application processor and its Icera® modem, which came to NVIDIA through its Icera acquisition in mid-2011. 

The ZTE Mimosa X is exciting for a few reasons,” said Michael Rayfield, General Manager of the Mobile business at NVIDIA. “The Mimosa X marks the first time NVIDIA technology powers all the major processors in a single smartphone, and also the first time a premium mobile computing experience is coming to the mainstream smartphone market.”

The Mimosa X is powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile processor, featuring a dual-core CPU and GeForce® GPU, and the NVIDIA Icera 450 HSPA+ modem, comprising baseband and RF processors, featuring excellent throughput and low power.  It will run Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0),feature a 4.3-inchqHD (960x540) screen, rear 5 MP and front cameras, and 4 GB of storage expandable to 32 GB.

The ZTE Mimosa X will deliver super multimedia capabilities, including advanced audio distribution profile (A2DP), Dolby sound, digital living network alliance (DLNA) compatibility for easy sharing of content, HD video record and play, dual microphones, and built-in gyroscope.

The Mimosa X will be launched around Q2 2012.Positioned squarely for the mainstream market, it brings new levels of performance and connectivity to this large segment of users.

Consumers will now be able to use a mainstream smartphone to experience the same speedy web browsing, smooth multitasking, and HD video, as well as console-quality gaming with TegraZone, that was previously available only in high-end phones. TegraZone™ is NVIDIA’s free Android Market app that showcases the best games optimized for the Tegra processor.

The NVIDIA Icera 450 supports up to 21Mbps category 14 HSPA+ with fast downloads in fading channels, IceClear™ interference cancellation technology for even faster throughput at the cell edge and advanced Release 7 features for an ultra-low latency network response.

ZTE, Huawei sign billion-dollar deals with US chip firms Qualcomm, Broadcom and Avago.

Chinese smartphone-maker ZTE has signed contracts worth US$5 billion with US chipset vendors Qualcomm and Broadcom, according to regulatory filings. The agreement with Qualcomm is worth US$4 billion and will cover chip supplies for the period 2012-15. The Broadcom deal is valued at US$1 billion and will cover 2012-14.

Meanwhile, ZTE’s Chinese rival Huawei handed contracts worth US$6 billion to a trio of US chip firms - Qualcomm, Broadcom and Avago – over the weekend. It said the deals “underscore Huawei’s continued commitment to the US market and… will directly and indirectly create over tens of thousands of job opportunities for US.”

According to recent figures from IDC, ZTE shipped 17.1 million mobile devices in Q4 2011 (a 4 percent global market share) making it the world's fifth-largest vendor, just behind Korean rival LG, which shipped 17.7 million (a 4.1 percent share). The Chinese firm also sold 12 million smartphones in 2011 thanks to strong sales of low-cost models for local operators such as China Unicom.

Chinese handset vendor ZTE will unveil two new LTE-enabled smartphones powered by Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), the latest version of Google’s mobile OS, at Mobile World Congress.

The PF200 will work on LTE, UMTS and GSM networks and is also equipped with Bluetooth, WiFi and NFC capability. It has a 1.5Ghz processor, a 4.3 inch capacitive touchscreen, an 8MP camera and a 1080p front-facing camera for video calling.

The N910 supports FDD-LTE, CDMA and EVDO technology and has a 1.2Ghz processor, 5MP camera, and 1080p front-facing camera.

“These LTE devices are the fore-runners of a wide range of LTE devices ZTE will bring to the market in the coming months, as more and more LTE networks come on stream,” said executive VP and head of ZTE’s terminal division of ZTE He Shiyou. He added that the products will feature on the company’s stand at Mobile World Congress.
